Most of us drink coffee either in the morning or on our way to class or work.
The main components of the magic potion are caffeine and antioxidants.
Caffeine has a number of positive values for our brain.
First, it increases alertness, meaning we feel more awake. The way it works is that the caffeine blocks the adenosine in the brain which is the chemical component that makes us sleepy.
It improves the mood by boosting our serotonin which is basically our “feel-good” neurotransmitters.
It sharpens our concentration. A study found that people that drink one large coffee in the morning and/or smaller amounts during the day are more effective at tasks that require concentration.
For the long term, coffee reduces the risk of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s due to the high concentration of antioxidants.
